JERUSALEM – In an unprecedented ceremony at the President's Residence, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu awarded Israel's highest military honor to a four-legged hero for the first time in the nation's history. Lavi, a Belgian Malinois military K9, received the Medal of Valor for detecting an explosive device that threatened the Prime Minister and his security detail during a counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank earlier this year.

The ceremony marked a historic moment as Lavi became not just the first canine recipient of Israel's most prestigious military award, but was also officially designated as "National Dog of Israel" – a title created specifically to honor his extraordinary service.

"Lavi represents the unwavering loyalty, courage, and dedication that characterizes Israel's finest defenders, both human and canine," said Netanyahu during the emotional ceremony. "Today we recognize that heroism comes in all forms, and this brave soldier has earned his place in Israel's history."

Jenin sweep: Lavi alerts on explosives beside the convoy

The incident that led to today's honors occurred during an unannounced visit by Netanyahu to an IDF base near Jenin in March. As the Prime Minister's convoy was preparing to depart, Lavi, who had been conducting a routine security sweep, suddenly alerted his handler to the presence of explosives hidden beneath a parked vehicle adjacent to the convoy's planned route.

Military officials confirmed that the device contained enough explosive material to have caused catastrophic casualties. Lavi's detection allowed security teams to evacuate the area safely before the bomb could be detonated, potentially saving the Prime Minister and his entire security detail from harm.

"Lavi's actions went far beyond his training and duty," said his handler, Staff Sergeant Daniel Cohen, who attended the ceremony with his canine partner. "In that moment, he wasn't just following commands – he was protecting his team, his country, and its leadership with an instinct that can only be described as heroic."

The Israeli Defense Forces' Oketz Unit, the elite K9 division to which Lavi belongs, has long been recognized for its crucial role in counter-terrorism operations. According to military records, Oketz dogs primarily handle sniffing out terrorists and finding explosives, making them an indispensable first line of defense in Israel's security operations.

"Lavi's exceptional performance is representative of the high standards and critical importance of our K9 units," said IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi. "These four-legged soldiers have saved countless lives through their service, and it is only fitting that we formally recognize their contributions."

The decision to create the special designation of "National Dog of Israel" for Lavi was unanimously approved by the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last month. The title carries no official responsibilities but serves as a lasting tribute to Lavi's service and the role of military working dogs in Israel's security.

"Lavi will continue serving with his unit," Cohen explained, "but now he carries an additional honor – not just for himself, but for all K9 soldiers who have served and continue to serve Israel."

The ceremony concluded with Netanyahu personally placing the medal around Lavi's neck, as the canine sat proudly at attention beside his handler. The Prime Minister then bent down to pat Lavi's head, prompting a rare moment of applause from the typically formal gathering.

"In Israel's challenging security environment, we depend on every resource available to protect our citizens," Netanyahu said in his closing remarks. "Today, we celebrate one of our most unique and valued defenders. Lavi, the National Dog of Israel – a true hero who has earned his place in our nation's history."

As the ceremony concluded, Lavi, tail wagging slightly, remained focused on his handler – a professional soldier even in the spotlight, ready for whatever mission comes next.
